Individual Health Plans

Many people are without an employer sponsored group health plan and are therefore vulnerable to health care costs not covered by their Provincial Health Insurance Plan. An Individual or Family Health Plan will cover many of these out-of-pocket expenses. Many incorporated, unincorporated and self-employed people can deduct their health insurance premiums from their annual income resulting in a tax savings and therefore reducing the cost of the plan.

In contrast to most group health plans, medical underwriting is required for many of the benefits. Therefore, coverage for some benefits may be restricted or, in certain cases, declined. The maximum reimbursement for some of the benefits also tends to be lower than a typical group plan. For example, the drug benefit is generally capped, the extended health care benefits often have a lifetime maximum, the travel coverage is for a shorter period, and the dental reimbursement is at a lower percentage and a reduced amount. Nevertheless, an Individual or Family Health Plan can be of significant benefit for many individuals, particularly for those without access to a group benefit plan.

An Individual or Family Health Plan can provide coverage in many areas including:

  • Life Insurance

  • Disability Insurance

  • Critical Illness Insurance

  • Accidental Death & Dismemberment

  • Prescription Drugs

  • Paramedical/Professional Services (e.g. chiropractor, physiotherapy, psychologist, podiatrist, etc.)

  • Private Duty Nursing

  • Semi-Private Hospital

  • Medical Supplies and Equipment (e.g. hospital beds, hearing aids, wheel chairs, canes, crutches, walkers and trusses)

  • Vision Care (e.g. eyeglasses and contact lenses)

  • Travel Insurance

  • Dental (periodontics, endodontics, major restorative, orthodontics)
